Adhi Yoga

By MyPanditji Editorial · Updated June 17, 2026 · Methodology

Adhi Yoga is formed when natural benefics — Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus — occupy the 6th, 7th, and 8th houses from the natal Moon, in any combination across those three houses. Described in classical texts including the Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra and Phaladeepika, this yoga is associated with leadership, prosperity, good health, and a life relatively free from serious enemies. When all three benefics are present across the three specified houses, the yoga is considered complete; partial presence of one or two benefics in those positions gives a proportionally reduced result.

Formed by
Natural benefics (Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) placed in the 6th, 7th, and 8th houses from the natal Moon
Type
Chandra-based yoga (Moon as reference point) with leadership and prosperity themes
Gives
Leadership capacity, prosperity, good health, and protection from adversaries — strongest when all three benefics participate

How it forms

The reference point is the Moon's sign, not the Ascendant. The 6th, 7th, and 8th positions from the Moon are counted using the sign-based (Parashari) house system. Classical texts specify that all three benefics ideally occupy these positions — one per house is the ideal distribution — but many commentators accept two benefics covering the three houses as a partial Adhi Yoga. Jupiter in the 7th from the Moon is the strongest individual factor among the three, given Jupiter's natural portfolio of wisdom, expansion, and dharmic authority.

Effects

  • A capacity for leadership and authority — the native often rises to direct or manage others
  • Material prosperity and financial stability supported by wise judgment and beneficial connections
  • Good physical vitality and resilience — the 6th house from the Moon becoming a benefic placement mitigates illness and enmity
  • Classical texts describe the native as kind-natured, long-lived, and influential within their sphere of activity

On strength and caveats

The quality of the yoga depends on whether the participating benefics are themselves dignified. A Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign, a strong Venus, and a Mercury free from debilitation or extreme combustion together form a potent Adhi Yoga. Conversely, if these benefics are significantly weakened or under malefic influence, the yoga's promise of leadership and prosperity is diluted. The yoga is also sensitive to the Moon's own condition — a strong, waxing Moon in a favorable sign amplifies the benefic influence of the surrounding planets, while a weak Moon may not fully channel it.

Frequently asked

Does Adhi Yoga work if only one benefic is in the 6th, 7th, or 8th from the Moon?

Classical texts suggest partial results with partial participation. A single benefic in those positions contributes benefically but does not constitute the full Adhi Yoga. Two benefics distributed across the three houses give moderate results; all three give the complete yoga.

Is Adhi Yoga evaluated only from the Moon, or also from the Ascendant?

The classical definition is from the Moon. However, some commentators also evaluate a parallel version from the Ascendant (benefics in the 6th, 7th, 8th from lagna), treating it as a related but distinct supportive pattern. The Moon-based version is the canonical Adhi Yoga.

Can Adhi Yoga coexist with difficult yogas in the same chart?

Yes. A chart can simultaneously contain Adhi Yoga and challenging combinations. The benefics in the 6th-8th from the Moon provide specific protective and elevating tendencies, but they do not override the entire chart's more difficult signatures. Reading them in the context of the full chart is essential.
