Chitra Nakshatra

Also known as Chitra star, Chitra.

By MyPanditji Editorial · Updated June 17, 2026 · Methodology

Chitra Nakshatra spans 23°20′ Virgo (Kanya) to 6°40′ Libra (Tula) and is the fourteenth nakshatra, ruled by Mars in the Vimshottari dasha system. Its presiding deity is Tvashtar (also called Vishwakarma), the divine craftsman and architect, and its symbol — a bright jewel or lustrous pearl — reflects brilliance, aesthetic mastery, and the drive to create something beautiful and enduring.

Nature and traits

Chitra carries Mars's drive and precision inside the aesthetic frameworks of Virgo and Libra, channelled through Tvashtar's genius for design and form. Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra and Phaladeepika describe Chitra natives as striking in appearance, visually sensitive, and motivated by an almost compulsive need to create something excellent. The Rakshasa gana suggests intensity, self-reliance, and a willingness to break convention in pursuit of a creative vision. Chitra is also classed as a Tikshna (sharp/dreadful) nakshatra in some classical categorisations — penetrating intelligence and a forceful personality are the shadow of this brilliance.

  • Exceptionally strong aesthetic and design sensibility
  • Competitive and driven — Mars pushes for the best, not merely the good
  • Magnetic personal appearance; often stylish or physically distinctive
  • Creative independence; can resist authority or collaborative constraint
  • Virgo–Libra span gives both analytical precision and a sense of proportion

Career and relationships

Tvashtar's patronage makes Chitra the nakshatra of architects, interior designers, jewellers, graphic artists, sculptors, surgeons (precision cutting), fashion designers, and filmmakers. Mars adds engineers, military strategists, and competitive athletes. In relationships, Chitra individuals are passionate and drawn to beauty in a partner — they notice and appreciate the visual and sensory dimensions of connection. The Rakshasa gana combined with Martian drive can produce jealousy or possessiveness if the chart is otherwise tense. At best they are intensely devoted; they value a partner who matches their ambition and appreciates their creative world.

Frequently asked

Does having Chitra rising (lagna) affect physical appearance?

Classical texts consistently link Chitra to a striking or attractive appearance — the bright-jewel symbol and Tvashtar's association with beautiful creation both point in this direction. A Chitra lagna or strong Chitra Moon may incline toward a well-proportioned, eye-catching appearance and a keen personal sense of style. These are tendencies observed in classical character sketches, not guarantees, and the full chart always modifies such indications.

Why is Chitra ruled by Mars when it spans artistic Libra?

Nakshatra lordship in the Vimshottari system is fixed by the dasha sequence and does not follow rashi boundaries. The two padas of Chitra in Libra are simultaneously in a Venus-ruled sign, so Venus and Mars both colour the native — Mars provides the drive and competitive perfectionism, Venus (via Libra) adds the love of beauty and harmony. This productive tension is often what makes Chitra so effective in design and aesthetic fields.
