Gajakesari Yoga
Also known as Gaja Kesari Yoga.
By MyPanditji Editorial · Updated June 17, 2026 · Methodology
Gajakesari Yoga is formed when Jupiter occupies a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) from the natal Moon. Classical texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra and Phaladeepika associate this combination with intelligence, eloquence, fame, and lasting prosperity. Its benefits are a tendency, not a guarantee — the actual strength of the yoga depends heavily on the condition of both Jupiter and the Moon in the chart.
- Formed by
- Jupiter in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house from the natal Moon
- Type
- Chandra-based yoga (Moon as reference point)
- Gives
- Intelligence, fame, prosperity, and respect in society
How it forms
The yoga is calculated from the Moon's position, not the Ascendant. If Jupiter falls in any of the four angular houses (kendras) counted from the Moon's sign, Gajakesari is present. The name combines 'Gaja' (elephant, symbol of wisdom and royalty) and 'Kesari' (lion, symbol of strength), evoking a personality that is both powerful and dignified.
Effects
- A tendency toward intellectual sharpness and clarity of speech
- Recognition, respect, and social standing that grows over time
- Material comfort and financial stability, particularly in Jupiter-related periods (dasha/antardasha)
- An inclination toward generosity, teaching, or advisory roles
On strength and caveats
This yoga can be present in a large portion of the population because Jupiter moves slowly, so placement alone is not sufficient to judge results. Both Jupiter and the Moon must be reasonably free from debilitation, severe combustion, or close affliction by malefics for the yoga to manifest meaningfully. Jupiter in its own sign (Sagittarius, Pisces) or exaltation (Cancer) and a waxing Moon significantly elevate the quality of this combination.

Frequently asked
Does everyone with Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon have Gajakesari Yoga?
Technically yes, but the yoga's strength varies enormously. A debilitated Jupiter or a weak, waning Moon in close affliction can reduce results to a mild tendency rather than prominent fame or wealth.
Which dasha activates Gajakesari Yoga most?
Jupiter's own mahadasha or antardasha is the most reliable trigger. Moon dasha periods can also bring results, especially when the Moon is the stronger of the two.
Does the yoga work the same from the Ascendant as from the Moon?
Classically, Gajakesari is specifically defined from the Moon. Jupiter in a kendra from the Ascendant is beneficial but is evaluated as a separate consideration — not as Gajakesari Yoga proper.
