Kaal Sarp Dosha
Also known as Kaal Sarp Yog, Kal Sarp Dosh.
By MyPanditji Editorial · Updated June 17, 2026 · Methodology
Kaal Sarp Dosha is the chart condition in which all seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, with no planet outside it. It is read as a karmic pattern of effort, delay and eventual breakthrough, not a curse.
- Formed by
- All 7 planets hemmed between Rahu and Ketu
- Type
- Rahu–Ketu axis yoga
- Common variants
- Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak (12 named forms)
How it is formed
Rahu and Ketu always sit exactly opposite each other (the lunar nodes, 180° apart). When every other planet is contained within the half of the chart from Rahu to Ketu — none escaping the axis — the chart is said to carry Kaal Sarp Dosha. If even one planet sits outside the axis, the dosha is partial (Aanshik) or absent. There are twelve named varieties depending on which house Rahu occupies.
What it means
Classical Rahu–Ketu literature reads the pattern as cycles of intense effort met with delay, sudden rises and falls, and a sense of unseen obstacles — alongside real intensity, ambition and eventual breakthrough once the karmic lesson is met. Modern practice is careful here: Kaal Sarp is heavily over-dramatised online. Its actual force depends entirely on the strength and placement of Rahu, Ketu and the hemmed planets in the specific chart. It is a tendency to work through, not a verdict.

Frequently asked
Is Kaal Sarp Dosha really dangerous?
No — it is one of the most exaggerated conditions in popular astrology. Classically it indicates a karmic pattern of effort and delay, but its strength depends on the dignity of Rahu, Ketu and the hemmed planets. Many successful people have a Kaal Sarp pattern. Read in full, it is a tendency to work through with patience and the prescribed observances, not a sentence.
How do I know if I have Kaal Sarp Dosha?
Check whether all seven planets (Sun through Saturn) lie on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis in your birth chart, with none outside it. If even one planet falls outside, the dosha is partial or absent. Generate your free Kundli and the chart will show the Rahu–Ketu axis and planetary spread.
What are the remedies for Kaal Sarp Dosha?
Classically: Nag Panchami observance, Rahu and Ketu beej mantras, Maha Mrityunjaya japa, and the Kaal-Sarp shanti puja at Trimbakeshwar or Kalahasti. Remedies are observances for steadiness — they are guidance, not a guarantee, and are best taken after a proper chart reading.
