Pitra Dosha

Also known as Pitru Dosha, Pitru Rina (ancestral debt).

By MyPanditji Editorial · Updated June 17, 2026 · Methodology

Pitra Dosha is an affliction of the Sun or the 9th house (the house of father and ancestors) — classically a Sun–Rahu or Sun–Saturn conjunction, or the 9th lord afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. It signifies pitru-rina, an unfinished ancestral debt asking to be honoured.

Meaning
Pitru-rina — ancestral karmic debt

How it is read

The Sun signifies the father and forefathers; the 9th house is the bhava of father, ancestry and dharma. When the Sun is conjoined or afflicted by Rahu or Saturn, or the 9th lord is afflicted by the shadow planets, the classics read it as pitru-rina — a debt to the ancestral line that surfaces as recurring obstruction in the family’s flow.

What it means

It typically shows as recurring obstacles in progeny, prosperity or family peace despite genuine effort — read not as a curse but as unfinished ancestral karma asking to be acknowledged. The traditional response is gratitude and rites toward the ancestors, and care for living elders, rather than fear.

Frequently asked

What is Pitra Dosha?

It is an affliction of the Sun or the 9th house — the significators of father and ancestors — usually a Sun–Rahu or Sun–Saturn conjunction, or the 9th lord afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. It is interpreted as pitru-rina, an ancestral debt, rather than a personal fault.

How is Pitra Dosha remedied?

Classically through Shraddha and Tarpan during Pitru Paksha, Pind-daan or ancestral rites at Gaya, feeding brahmins, cows, crows and the needy in the ancestors’ name, and — the first remedy the tradition names — caring for living elders. The spirit is honour and gratitude, not appeasement.
