Free gana calculator

Find your gana. Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa. Free.

The Moon's nakshatra at birth sets your gana. MyPanditji reads it from a chart of your exact birth time and place — Lahiri ayanamsa, JPL DE440 ephemeris — then shows your traits, the shadow side, and how your gana scores against a partner's, out of 6. The three ganas — all 27 nakshatras

Each gana holds nine nakshatras — the classical division per Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra and the Muhurta texts. The last line of each card is the gana page's quick Gana koot read, out of 6. The full Kundli Milan applies the classical gender-directional table, so its gana line can differ by a point.

FAQ

Is the gana calculator free?

Yes. Gana is one of the features MyPanditji keeps free on the website, alongside Kundli, Panchang and the Planetary Timeline. You need a MyPanditji account — sign in with WhatsApp or email — and there is nothing to pay. Chatting with Panditji about your gana is free as well, with a daily message cap on the free plan.

How is my gana calculated?

From the Moon's nakshatra at birth. MyPanditji computes an engine chart from your exact birth date, time and place — Lahiri ayanamsa over the JPL DE440 ephemeris, the same chart your Kundli uses — reads the Moon's sidereal longitude, and lands it in one of the 27 nakshatras. Each nakshatra belongs to one gana. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour and a nakshatra spans only 13°20', so the birth time matters; if your time or place is missing, a date-only approximation is used instead.

Which nakshatras are Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa gana?

Nine each, the classical division from Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra and the Muhurta texts. Deva: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati. Manushya: Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada. Rakshasa: Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha.

What is gan dosh?

In Ashtakoot Kundli Milan, gana is the sixth of the eight koots, worth 6 of the 36 points. The gana page uses a quick symmetric table — same gana 6, Deva–Manushya 6, Manushya–Rakshasa 1, Deva–Rakshasa 0. The full Kundli Milan uses the classical gender-directional table (Deva boy–Rakshasa girl 1, Manushya–Rakshasa 0 either way, Manushya boy–Deva girl 5); the 0 and 1 pairings are what matchers call gan dosh and sometimes treat as a dealbreaker. The verdict always rests on all eight koots together, never on gana alone, and the classical texts name cancellations: a shared Moon rashi or a shared nakshatra lord can soften a Deva–Rakshasa mismatch. Ask Panditji about a match and it names the ones that apply.

Dev gan, manushya gan, rakshas gan — are these the same thing?

Yes. Dev gan is Deva gana, manushya gan is Manushya gana and rakshas gan is Rakshasa gana — the Hindi spellings of the three Sanskrit names. The page shows the names in English, and in Devanagari when Hindi is your language.

Can I check a family member or a partner?

Yes. The picker at the top runs the calculation for you or for any saved profile — family or friends. For a partner you have not saved, pick their gana from the three and the page scores the pairing out of 6. For the full eight-koot Kundli Milan, run the matchmaking — it computes all eight koots from both birth charts.
